10 Fire Safety Tips for Lake Houston-Area Families
Plus local safety opportunities and family fire events worth the drive
October 9 is Fire Prevention Day, making this the perfect time for families in Humble, Kingwood, Atascocita and the Lake Houston area to check their smoke alarms, review their escape plans and help children understand what to do during a fire emergency.
Fire Prevention Week is observed during the week of October 9 in remembrance of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. The 2026 campaign, held October 4–10, focuses on rechargeable lithium-ion batteries and safe charging practices.
These conversations do not have to frighten children. The goal is to help them feel prepared, recognize the sound of a smoke alarm and know exactly what to do if they ever hear one.
Practice your family’s escape plan during the day and at night.Test alarms monthly and teach children to recognize the sound. Install alarms inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of your home.
Identify two possible ways out of every room. Draw the routes together so younger children can see and understand the plan.
Pick one permanent location a safe distance from your home, such as a mailbox, neighbor’s driveway or specific tree.
Families may have less than two minutes to escape after an alarm sounds. Practice until everyone can safely reach the meeting place.
Children should never hide, stop for belongings or go back inside for a person or pet. Call 911 once everyone is safely outside.
Masks, helmets and protective equipment can look frightening. Remind children that firefighters are helpers and they should never hide from one.
Store fire-starting materials in a locked or elevated location where children cannot reach them.
Keep children at least three feet away from hot stoves, ovens and grills. Never leave active cooking unattended.
Use manufacturer-approved equipment and charge devices on a hard surface—not a bed, sofa or under a pillow. Stop using batteries that become hot, swollen, leaky or misshapen.
If clothing catches fire, children should stop moving, drop to the ground, cover their face and roll until the flames are out.
